14oz vs 16oz Boxing Gloves: Which Do You Need?

by warriors mindset on Jun 13, 2026
14oz vs 16oz boxing gloves comparison guide UK - Warriors Mindset

Choosing between 14oz and 16oz boxing gloves is one of the most common decisions adult fighters face. Both weights can be useful for training, and both can be used for sparring depending on the athlete, coach and gym rules.

The important question is not simply which glove is "better". It is whether you need a lighter glove for pads and bags, a glove for regular sparring, or one pair that can cover several types of training.

Quick answer: can you spar with 14oz gloves?

Yes. You can spar with 14oz boxing gloves if your gym or coach allows them. Many gyms accept 14oz for sparring, particularly depending on the athlete's size, experience and the intensity of the session.

16oz is commonly recommended for regular adult sparring because it is a heavier glove and generally provides more padding. Some gyms specifically require 16oz, while others are comfortable with 14oz.

Lighter or younger athletes may also spar in 12oz or 14oz where their coach considers that appropriate.

If you want one heavier pair for regular sparring and general training, 16oz is a strong choice. If you want a lighter glove for pads, bags and sparring where permitted, 14oz can be a very versatile option.

14oz vs 16oz for Sparring: Why It Matters

The difference between 14oz and 16oz is approximately two ounces of glove weight, but how that difference feels depends on the glove's construction, padding and fit.

A 14oz glove generally feels lighter and quicker during combinations. A 16oz glove feels heavier and usually carries additional material and padding, which is one reason many coaches prefer it for regular adult sparring.

Neither weight should automatically be labelled as a "sparring glove" or "non-sparring glove" without considering the athlete and the gym rules.

The core question is simple: what type of training are you doing, and what does your coach require?

14oz Boxing Gloves: Who Are They For?

14oz gloves are a versatile adult training option. They are widely used for pad work, heavy bag sessions, technical training and, where permitted by the coach or gym, sparring.

The lighter feel compared with 16oz can make combinations feel quicker and can reduce the amount of glove weight you are moving during longer technical sessions.

For pads and bags, that lighter feel is one of the main reasons fighters choose 14oz.

14oz can also be acceptable for sparring. The important factor is the context. A coach may consider the fighter's weight, experience, control and sparring intensity before deciding whether 14oz or 16oz is appropriate.

14oz gloves are a strong choice if:

  • You want a versatile adult training glove
  • You regularly train on pads and bags
  • You want a lighter feel than 16oz
  • Your gym permits 14oz for your sparring sessions
  • You already own heavier sparring gloves and want a second training pair

16oz Boxing Gloves: Who Are They For?

16oz gloves are commonly used for regular adult sparring and heavier training.

Warriors Mindset 16oz boxing gloves for regular sparring and training

The additional glove weight generally means more material and padding compared with a similar 14oz model. This is why many coaches prefer 16oz when adult fighters are doing regular or harder sparring.

The heavier glove also increases the amount of weight your shoulders and arms move during every round.

This can be useful for conditioning. Fighters who regularly train in heavier gloves may notice that their hands feel quicker when they later compete in lighter gloves because they are moving less glove weight.

Some athletes therefore use 16oz for a large amount of training while also including lighter-glove pad and bag sessions so they remain familiar with competition speed and feel.

16oz gloves are a strong choice if:

  • You regularly spar and want a heavier, more padded glove
  • Your coach or gym requires 16oz
  • You want to increase the workload during training rounds
  • You are a heavier athlete
  • You want one heavier pair that can cover sparring, pads and bags

Head-to-Head Comparison: 14oz vs 16oz

Warriors Mindset 14oz boxing gloves side view

Feature 14oz 16oz
Glove weight Lighter Heavier
Padding Generally less than equivalent 16oz model Generally more than equivalent 14oz model
Hand speed Lighter, quicker feel Heavier training feel
Training workload Lower glove resistance More weight for shoulders and arms to move
Sparring Accepted by many gyms depending on athlete and session Commonly recommended for regular adult sparring
Pads and bags Excellent option Can also be used
Younger/lighter athletes Often useful depending on coach May be unnecessarily heavy for some athletes
Best for Pads, bags, technical training and permitted sparring Regular sparring, heavier training and conditioning

There is no automatic winner. 14oz offers a lighter training feel and can still be suitable for sparring where permitted. 16oz provides a heavier training experience and is commonly preferred when more padding is wanted for adult sparring.

If you want a broader buying comparison rather than a sparring-focused answer, read our 14oz vs 16oz Boxing Gloves guide.

What Do UK Boxing Gyms Require?

There is no single glove-weight rule followed by every UK boxing or Muay Thai gym.

Many gyms accept 14oz for adult sparring. Others prefer or specifically require 16oz.

Lighter and younger athletes may also spar in 12oz or 14oz depending on their size, experience and the coach's judgement.

Some interclubs, gym events or organised sparring sessions may also specify their own glove requirements. Follow the rules of that particular event rather than assuming the same rule applies everywhere.

The practical rule: ask your coach before buying gloves specifically for sparring.

Training Gloves vs Competition Gloves

Competition glove weight is a separate subject from everyday sparring glove choice.

Under current England Boxing rules for club tournaments and championships, fighters weighing 65kg and under use 10oz competition gloves, while fighters over 65kg use 12oz competition gloves. If one boxer is over 65kg and the opponent is 65kg or under, both wear 12oz.

Professional boxing uses different rules again. Under British Boxing Board of Control rules, male professional contests from Flyweight through Welterweight use 8oz gloves, while Super-Welterweight and above use 10oz. Female professional contests use 10oz.

Interclubs and other events can use their own requirements, so always check the specific event rules.

The main point is that competition gloves and everyday sparring gloves are different tools. Do not choose your normal gym glove simply by copying the glove weight you see fighters wearing in competition.

Can You Spar With 14oz Gloves?

Yes, you can spar with 14oz gloves where your coach or gym permits them.

Many gyms accept 14oz, particularly depending on the fighter's size and the type of sparring session.

Some gyms prefer 16oz because it provides a heavier glove and generally more padding. If your gym specifically requires 16oz, then that rule obviously takes priority.

Younger and lighter athletes may also use 12oz or 14oz for supervised sparring when their coach considers it suitable.

For technical sessions, pads and bags, 14oz is also an excellent adult training option.

If you regularly train at several different gyms, check their requirements before travelling to a sparring session because rules can differ from club to club.

Why Do Fighters Train in Heavier Gloves?

There is a useful reason many fighters spend significant training time in 14oz or 16oz gloves even though their competition gloves may be lighter.

A heavier glove increases the amount of weight the shoulders and arms must move repeatedly during each round. That can increase the workload during training.

When competition arrives and the athlete changes into a lighter glove required by the event, their hands may feel quicker because they are moving less weight.

That does not mean lighter gloves should never be used in training. Some athletes deliberately do bag and pad sessions in 10oz or another lighter glove so they remain familiar with professional or amateur competition feel.

A well-planned programme can therefore use both heavier and lighter gloves for different purposes.

The One-Pair Solution: Which Should You Choose?

If you can only buy one pair, base the decision on the training you actually do.

Choose 14oz if:

  • Your training is mainly pads, bags and technical work
  • You prefer a lighter adult glove
  • Your coach allows 14oz for your sparring
  • You want one versatile glove without the additional weight of 16oz

Choose 16oz if:

  • You regularly spar and want additional glove weight and padding
  • Your gym requires 16oz
  • You want to use heavier gloves for conditioning
  • You prefer one heavier pair for most of your training

Many fighters eventually own both: 14oz for pads, bags and technical work, and 16oz for regular sparring and heavier training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 14oz or 16oz better for a beginner?

Either can work depending on the beginner's training. If most sessions are pads and bags, 14oz can be a practical adult training glove. If regular sparring is planned or the gym requires a heavier glove, 16oz is a strong starting point. Ask the coach before buying specifically for sparring.

Do 14oz gloves hit harder than 16oz?

You should not assume that glove weight alone determines how hard a punch lands. Punch force depends on the athlete, technique, speed, glove construction and padding. A 14oz glove feels lighter than a 16oz glove, while a comparable 16oz model generally provides more overall glove weight and padding. For sparring, follow your coach's requirements rather than choosing gloves based on perceived punching power.

I weigh 60kg. Should I get 14oz or 16oz?

At 60kg, 14oz can be an excellent option for pads, bags and technical training. It may also be used for sparring if your coach permits it. 16oz remains an option if you want a heavier glove, additional padding or your gym requires it.

What about 12oz gloves?

12oz gloves are commonly used for pads and bag training by lighter athletes and can also be suitable for supervised sparring for some younger or lighter fighters. Whether they are appropriate for partner work depends on the athlete and the coach's rules.

Can you spar with 14oz boxing gloves?

Yes. Many gyms accept 14oz gloves for sparring. Other gyms prefer or require 16oz, especially for regular adult sparring. Your coach's rule should always take priority.

Why do fighters train in 16oz gloves if they compete in lighter gloves?

Heavier gloves increase the amount of weight the arms and shoulders move during training. When fighters later compete in lighter gloves, their hands may feel quicker because they are moving less glove weight. Some athletes also use lighter gloves during selected pad and bag sessions to stay familiar with competition feel.

Now you know the difference, choose the pair that matches your actual training.
