Muay Thai Equipment Guide: Everything You Need to Train & Fight

by warriors mindset on Apr 04, 2026
Warriors Mindset Muay Thai equipment guide gloves pads shin guards UK

Muay Thai is one of the most complete striking arts in the world. It uses punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and clinch work, which means your equipment list is longer than boxing and more specific than most combat sports. The right gear protects you during training, lets you go harder for longer, and lasts through years of serious use.

This guide covers every piece of Muay Thai equipment you need, from your first session to full sparring kit. We cover what to buy first, what to buy later, what to look for in each piece of equipment, and what to avoid.

The Complete Muay Thai Equipment List

1. Hand Wraps

The first thing you buy. The cheapest piece of equipment on this list. The most important.

Hand wraps protect the 27 small bones in your hand, stabilise your wrist, and compress your knuckles before your gloves go on. Training without wraps puts your hands and wrists at serious risk, even in light sessions. Use 4M Mexican style wraps for full coverage of the wrist, knuckles, and thumb.

Read our complete hand wraps guide for a full breakdown of 2M vs 4M, how to wrap correctly, and how to care for your wraps.

2. Muay Thai Gloves

Your gloves are your most important piece of equipment after hand wraps. Muay Thai gloves are slightly different from pure boxing gloves. They tend to have a more open palm design to allow for clinch work and grabbing, and the padding distribution is optimised for both punching and blocking kicks.

For beginners, start with 14oz or 16oz for maximum protection during bag work and sparring. 16oz is the safer choice if you plan to spar at all.

Read our complete boxing gloves guide for a full breakdown of sizing, materials, and what to look for.

3. Shin Guards

In Muay Thai, leg kicks are a core weapon. Shin guards are non-negotiable for sparring. They protect both you and your training partner during kick exchanges and allow you to train at higher intensity without accumulating unnecessary damage.

Look for full shin and instep coverage, multi-layer foam padding, and wide secure straps that stay in place during movement. Genuine leather outlasts synthetic significantly.

4. Muay Thai Shorts

Muay Thai shorts are cut wider and shorter than standard fight shorts or MMA shorts. The wide cut is functional, not aesthetic. It allows full hip rotation for kicks and knees without restriction. Standard gym shorts or MMA shorts limit your range of motion and make kicking technique harder to develop.

Look for a wide waistband that stays in place during movement, a cut that sits above the knee, and a fabric that breathes well during intense rounds.

5. Mouthguard

Essential before any sparring. A mouthguard protects your teeth and jaw and reduces the risk of concussion by absorbing impact. Do not spar without one.

A boil-and-bite mouthguard from a sports shop works well for most training levels. A custom-fitted guard from a dentist offers better protection and comfort but costs significantly more. For most Muay Thai practitioners, a quality boil-and-bite guard is adequate.

6. Thai Pads

If you train with a partner or coach, Thai pads are essential. They allow you to practise full-power kicks, knees, and elbows safely. Thai pads are held by a partner and absorb the impact of strikes, giving you a realistic target to develop power and technique.

Thai pads require a partner who knows how to hold them correctly. If you are training at a gym, your coach will hold pads for you. If you train at home with a partner, both of you need to learn pad holding technique to avoid injury.

7. Heavy Bag

A heavy bag lets you train solo at full power. For Muay Thai, a longer bag that hangs low enough to kick is important. Standard boxing bags are often too short for low kick practice. A 6-foot bag or a banana bag that reaches near the floor is ideal for full Muay Thai training including low kicks and body kicks.

8. Elbow Pads

Elbow strikes are one of the most dangerous weapons in Muay Thai. During sparring, elbow pads protect both fighters from cuts and serious injury. Most gyms require elbow pads for any sparring that includes elbows.

9. Headguard

Required for sparring in most UK Muay Thai gyms. A headguard protects your head and face during sparring exchanges. Look for a guard with cheek protection and a secure chin strap. Open-face guards are more common in Muay Thai than full-face guards as they allow better visibility.

10. Groin Guard

Essential for male fighters before sparring. Muay Thai includes knee strikes and body kicks that can land low. A groin guard is non-negotiable for any contact sparring.

11. Training Bag

A ventilated kit bag keeps your gear organised and lets it breathe between sessions. Sealing damp gloves and shin guards in a closed bag breeds bacteria and destroys equipment quickly. A proper training bag is a small investment that extends the life of everything else.

Muay Thai Equipment for Beginners: What to Buy First

You do not need everything on this list before your first session. Here is the priority order:

  1. Hand wraps: Buy before your first class. Cheap and essential.
  2. Muay Thai gloves (14oz or 16oz): Buy before your first class or borrow from the gym for the first session.
  3. Muay Thai shorts: Buy in the first week. Standard gym shorts work temporarily but limit your movement.
  4. Mouthguard: Buy before you start sparring.
  5. Shin guards: Buy before you start sparring.
  6. Headguard and groin guard: Buy when your coach says you are ready to spar.
  7. Elbow pads: Buy when your gym introduces elbow sparring.

Muay Thai Equipment for Home Training

If you train at home or supplement your gym sessions with solo training, here is what you need:

  • Heavy bag: A 6-foot or banana bag for full Muay Thai training
  • Hand wraps and gloves: Same as gym training
  • Skipping rope: Skipping is a core part of Muay Thai conditioning
  • Thai pads: If you have a training partner at home
  • Mirror: For shadow boxing and technique work

How to Care for Your Muay Thai Gear

Proper care extends the life of your equipment significantly and keeps bacteria under control:

  • Air out gloves and shin guards after every session: Never seal them in your bag while still warm and damp
  • Wash hand wraps after every use: Machine wash in a mesh bag on a gentle cycle, air dry only
  • Wipe equipment with antibacterial spray after training, especially the inside of gloves and shin guards
  • Condition leather equipment every few months to prevent cracking
  • Check straps and velcro regularly and replace when grip is lost
  • Wash Muay Thai shorts after every session on a gentle cycle

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Muay Thai gloves and boxing gloves?

Muay Thai gloves typically have a more open palm design to allow for clinch work and grabbing. Boxing gloves are more closed and optimised purely for punching. For most training purposes, quality boxing gloves work well for Muay Thai. Dedicated Muay Thai gloves become more relevant at higher training levels.

Do I need special shorts for Muay Thai?

Yes. The wide cut of Muay Thai shorts is functional. It allows full hip rotation for kicks and knees. Standard gym shorts or MMA shorts restrict movement and make developing proper kicking technique harder. Muay Thai shorts are worth buying early.

How much does a full Muay Thai kit cost in the UK?

A complete beginner kit including hand wraps, gloves, shorts, shin guards, and mouthguard typically costs between £100 and £200 depending on quality. Investing in genuine leather gloves and shin guards upfront costs more but saves money over time as they last significantly longer than synthetic alternatives.

Can I use my Muay Thai gear for MMA?

Yes. Most Muay Thai equipment works for MMA training. MMA-specific shin guards are shorter and allow more ground movement, which is worth considering if you spend significant time on the ground. Read our MMA Training UK guide for more on building a complete MMA kit.

What size gloves do I need for Muay Thai?

Beginners should start with 14oz or 16oz. 16oz is the standard sparring weight in most UK gyms. Read our complete boxing gloves guide for a full sizing breakdown.
